One of the first tasks of taking on a siding project is seeking out and hiring a licensed and experienced contractor. This can be an intimidating task for many people. As few have extensive knowledge of the siding industry, it is difficult to know what questions to ask. Knowing this, Kansas City Siding decided to create a list of interview questions that we recommend. We want you to have the best possible siding experience.
Here are questions to ask a potential contractor:
- How long have you had your contractor’s license? Is your license current?
- Is your quote all-inclusive? (i.e. waste removal, unexpected delays, etc.)
- Do you primarily work with siding and exteriors?
- What siding materials are you comfortable with? Do you have examples of your work to show me?
- When do you think you will be able to start on the job? When do you think you will be able to finish?
It is advisable to interview a large number of candidates before hiring a contractor. When you have sorted through the answers and decided on the contractor that you think is best suited to the position, your next task is to draw up and sign a contract. You will want to make sure that the agreement includes a list of all services to be provided and a full log of the project’s cost.
SIDING MATERIAL COST COMPARISON
Just about every budget can accommodate new siding. Whether you have cash to spare or are just scraping by, Kansas City Siding has something for you. If you are able to purchase a higher-quality material, such as fiber cement or cedar, we do recommend that you pursue the option. In the siding business, you tend to get what you pay for with materials.
When you are picking out exterior products, keep the following things in mind:
- Does it require work post-installation? (i.e. staining, painting, scraping)
- Is there a warranty or guarantee on the material?
- Is the produce amenable to local weather conditions?
- What will your home look like when the project is finished and you have your new siding in place?
SIDING INSTALLATION COST
The cost of siding installation can vary wildly, contractor to contractor, typically in line with local supply and demand and the person’s professional experience. The quality and name brand of the exterior materials chosen also play a role, though less so than the above. The average cost of new siding ranges from six to twelve dollars per square foot, including labor expenses. Cedar is the most expensive material to install, as the boards require delicate handling. Fiber cement siding—the most popular material in the Kansas City Area—is somewhat difficult to work with, but runs in the middle of the pack in terms of cost. Vinyl siding is the least expensive, being quite easy to work with.
The lowest possible cost of new siding is self-installed vinyl. While DIY installation may save a bit of money up front, these savings are not likely to last over the long term. Self-installed exteriors tend to decay very quickly, requiring repair and replacement. Exterior experts recommend that home and business owners seek out qualified professionals—like those here at Kansas City Siding—to do the job.
